Awareness of World Down Syndrome Day

World down Syndrome day this year is celebrated on the 21st March 2026.

The purpose is to dedicate time to the awareness, understanding and above all connection. Especially since this year’s theme carries a message; Together against loneliness. We know this day speaks deeply to the experiences of many people with Down Syndrome and the families who love them

The day was officially recognised by the United nations in 2011.

The Invisible Side of the Journey: Loneliness

Raising a child with Down syndrome is a journey filled with joy, pride, and unforgettable milestones. But it can also feel isolating at times.

There are days spent in waiting rooms, navigating assessments, advocating for inclusion, or trying to explain your child’s needs to people who may not fully understand.

However, both Children and adults with Down syndrome also experience loneliness when society doesn’t make enough space for them.

This is why today is so important. A reminder that just because someone learns differently, communicates differently, or simply needs the world to slow down, no one should feel alone

What does Inclusion mean?

“Inclusion” is a word we hear often, but for our children, it can be the difference between belonging and being left out.

True inclusion means:

  • Being invited into spaces
  • Being supported in school in a way that helps them thrive
  • Being given the same opportunity as everyone else
  • Being able to join clubs, sports, and activities with the right adjustments
  • Being seen as capable individuals with their own interests, personalities, and talents

At Medway Parents & Carers, we know firsthand how important connection, understanding, and support are for families of children with additional needs, including those with Down syndrome.

We’re here to listen, guide, and stand beside families as they navigate the challenges and celebrate the joys that come with raising a child with SEND.
